What is gestational Diabetes?
Women who are not having history of diabetes but their blood sugar level rises during the pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes.According to American Diabetes Association 4% of pregnant women suffer from gestational diabetes every year. There are no definite causes of diabetes but there are some clues.
Placenta is the baby supporting organ in the body of mother and it releases hormones which helps in the growth of the baby but these hormones counteract the action of insulin and this mechanism is called insulin resistance. As insulin is needed to change glucose into energy for our body and the lack of insulin in this case causes hyperglycemia that is high level of glucose in the blood.
If the mother is having diabetes before pregnancy the baby can have some congenital defects because of this but it is not the same in the case of gestational diabetes as it affects in the late pregnancy and the baby is already grown in the late pregnancy. In the case of untreated gestational diabetes more glucose passes through the placenta and goes to the baby this cause high level of glucose in the blood of baby which can result in macrosomia that is fat baby. These babies can face some injuries during the birth an can also have health problems in the later life.If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes it should be controlled and treated properly.
